What is the Best Legionella Test for Our Facility?

Legionella testing methods could vary by the type of water system and the reason for testing. Sample volumes processed, plate types, resuspension procedures, and result reporting vary by type of test and the test provider, so there are many factors that can affect the Legionella test execution.

There are two main types of Legionella tests: the traditional test and the Legionella rapid test.

Legionella Traditional Test (culture / spread plate):

  • Detects viable bacteria
  • Detects all Legionella species
  • Results typically reported in 7–14 days
  • May be preferred for evaluating growth trends
  • Legionella Rapid Test
  • Results typically reported during the same day
  • Is useful for negative screening
  • May be preferred for evaluating whether remediation was successful

In addition to the above Legionella tests, Legionella Control Systems also offers a precursor test which can be very cost effective and useful when run in conjunction with one of the two main tests. This precursor test is also a very cost-effective way to monitor the conditions which could allow Legionella to grow.
